KAMSC Centre for Aboriginal Primary Health Care Training, Education & Research (CAPTER) will be delivering a revised 2008 Pharmacy assistant Training course in 2008. The first block of training will commence in July 2008. Students will undertake training which is specific to working in the pharmacy environment of an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. They will learn to assist in the day to day operations of a clinic pharmacy, and will undergo training related to:

  • Quality Use of Medicines, including availability of different dosage forms, medication uses, side effects, precautions, contraindications,  storage etc

  • The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and Section 100 Supply Scheme to Remote Aboriginal Health Services

  • Ordering/receiving stock and all aspects of stock management Laws and Ethical considerations related to medications

  • Dispensing Procedures

  • Basic training on Dosette box preparation and Webster Pack management procedures

  • Basic Medication Calculations

  • Basic use of drug references such as MIMS and the Australian Medicines Handbook

Understanding of commonly prescribed drugs in the Kimberley, and have a sound appreciation of medicines listed in the Kimberley Standard Drug List.

Trained pharmacy assistants may be a more cost-effective alternative to AHW’s and RN’s who complete these tasks on top of their already busy schedule.

The training will be delivered in a similar format to the Aboriginal Health Worker training and will involve face-to-face (in blocks) and on-the- job training. The on-the-job training will occur at a designated Aboriginal Health Services. It is anticipated that each student will take approximately 6 months to fully complete the course.

The training package is not yet accredited, and therefore there is no specific training funding available to assist students with their studies in this Pharmacy Assistant Training Course for 2008. Hence, all travel/accommodation costs will need to be met by the individual or the associated Aboriginal Health Service. After successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a KAMSC Pharmacy Assistant Course,  Certificate of  Completion.
