Aboriginal Health Worker Training

Who are Aboriginal Health Workers?

Aboriginal Health Workers are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people who have been trained to help their own people in health related areas.

 

Aboriginal Health Worker Courses

Can you do the training?

To be eligible to undertake the Aboriginal Health Worker training, you should be:

  • Of Aboriginal or Torres Strait descent/origin.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Eligible for Abstudy assistance.

It is also desirable that you have:

  • Year 10 literacy and numeracy or equivalent.
  • A sense of responsibility on your community.
  • Full support from your community.

 

What skills will you gain?

The course available in Aboriginal Health Work offer you the unique opportunity to gets hands on training in the following areas:

  • Clinical application
  • Population health
  • Emergency training
  • Introduction to counselling
  • Medicines and how they work
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Senior First Aid
  • Office Administration

 

What qualifications will you receive?

Courses available at the School of Health Studies are:

  • Certificate III in Aboriginal Health Work. (more info here)
  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care Practice. (more info here)

These courses are fully accredited and require full-time attendance. Once you have completed both courses, you will be a qualified Aboriginal Health Worker.

What is involved in undertaking the course?

People are required to attend block release theory that could take them away from their home. This will be for two to three weeks at a time.

In order to gain experience in the work place, students will be required to participate in Practical Placement as part of each course. These are held in a Health Clinic setting and occur after each study block.

Where are the courses held?

The chosen clinics for your Practical Placements are located throughout the Kimberley region - thus training staff cannot always determine where you may be located for these training periods. The location of the study blocks for 2008 are yet to be determined.
